DESCRIPTION
ZEBRA transformed a commercial lobby space into a stunning pop up gallery
Many people may never set foot in a gallery space. Art can be viewed as intimidating, or as something without reach. Something that may make us feel alienated, finding it hard to comprehend and the topic of buying art is a complete separate topic – something that is considered only wealthy people can do.
ZEBRA is working to change that.
Our goal for this project was to bring art to unexpected spaces and in particular, everyday spaces. We wanted to ‘interrupt’ the greyness of the everydayness with colour and beauty, spark imagination and creativity.
ZEBRA wants to bring art a little bit closer to people, making it accessible, within reach, less intimidating… and at the same time, contribute to bringing people and the community together, provoke discussions, and provide a platform for emerging artists to display their work, outside of the standard boundaries such as gallery spaces.
THE EXHIBITION’S THEME:
‘There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs’.
This expression is unique and individual to each one of us.
In urban settings, we use things like elevators, together, as a means of travel through space and time, entering and exiting the making of our personal journeys.
These journeys differ and can formulate into the ‘everyday-ness’ of life and feel ordinary. But when we stop and take note of our individual everyday uniqueness, we can see beyond the mundane and spark the beauty that surround us.
The selected works of these 12 Canadian artists exhibited, take into account their own interpretation of the theme, “You have to take the Stairs”, with beautiful colour, shapes and stories.
Zebra Public Art Mgmt. and Yonge + St. Clair collaborated to create this exhibition to showcase the modern voices and talents of local artists.
